Immigration racket
Washington, July 1 (PTI): A veteran customs official at a US international airport has admitted to having smuggled scores of undocumented immigrants, mostly from India, into the country even in the weeks after 9/11.

Otis Rackley of Newark Liberty international airport in New Jersey took $5,000 from each of the illegal immigrants. Appearing before US district judge Dennis Cavanaugh in Newark, Rackley pleaded guilty yesterday to charges of sneaking in aliens past customs inspectors.

Over two years, he and his fellow conspirators collected as much as $1 million, investigators said. “This individual, he sold out the country,” said Kyle Hutchins, the special agent in charge of the US immigration and customs enforcement in Newark.

“He did these sort of things for money and greed, not even thinking of the consequences.”

Arms supply

Ilyas Ali, a naturalised India-born US citizen, pleaded guilty to charges that he conspired to supply weapons to terrorists through the sale of drugs.

Ali, a resident of St Paul, Minnesota, is to be sentenced on September 29 in San Diego.

He is among five men who have been convicted or face trials in investigations that stem from the US war on terror.
