TNS: VA Group Vows to Monitor for Abuses of New Immigration Law

Jun 24 - A Virginia advocacy group announced yesterday that it would be closely monitoring the actions of local police once a new state law allowing for the detention of some illegal immigrants without a warrant goes into effect on July 1. Virginia Alliance for Sensible Community Police Efforts, a coalition of community leaders and advocates, has said they will encourage immigrants to cooperate with local police investigations, but will remain on guard for cases of racial profiling or other such abuses.

The new law -- part of the national push to increase security after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks -- allows police to arrest without a warrant illegal immigrants who have returned the United States after being arrested for a felony and deported. Police will be able to hold suspects up to 72 hours without bond while waiting for a federal immigration agent.
