SOLEDAD, Calif. -- A 17-year-old mother faces charges of attempted murder after a newborn girl was found abandoned in a portable toilet near Soledad Thursday.

Authorities say Rosa Cruz gave birth to the baby girl Thursday, and despite being left in the toilet for more than an hour, the girl survived. She's at Stanford Hospital, where her condition was upgraded Friday afternoon from critical to serious.

Rosa Cruz, of Greenfield, is an undocumented field worker who just recently came to the Central Coast from Mexico, according to authorities.

Sheriff's deputies have charged Rosa Cruz with attempted murder. They say they are still trying to figure out what happened.

"It seems like several of her statements have changed as time has gone by through her interviews. So, (we're) going to examine all the statements that she gave us and see what the actually true reasoning was why she left the child behind," said Monterey County Sheriff's Department spokesman Fred Garcia.

Sheriff's deputies don't believe Rosa Cruz knew about a state law that allows mothers to leave their newborns at hospitals.

Sara Cruz, Rosa's sister, says she hasn't been able to talk to her sister since she was arrested. She says she feels sorry for the baby and can't possibly imagine what Rosa was thinking when she allegedly abandoned her baby.

Rosa Cruz is also in the hospital. Deputies say she'll be transferred to juvenile hall and be arraigned in juvenile court early next week.
