Palm Springs, CA: Illegal Immigrant roundup causing school absences

KESQ NewsChannel 3 Palm Springs, CA: Illegal Immigrant roundup causing school absences

(San Bernardino-AP) -- School officials in San Bernardino say fewer students in one school district are coming to school after federal agents began taking illegal immigrants into custody two weeks ago.

The school district superintendent says -quote- "Kids are afraid to go to school and parents don't want to send them to school."

US Border Patrol agents have arrested more than 400 suspected illegal immigrants - many of Mexican origin - in Southern California since June 4th.

Officials say the arrests were made by agents in the agency's newly formed 12-member unit based in Riverside County. A senior patrol agent for the San Diego area, says the arrests are routine.

But local officials, residents and business owners say the arrests have scared people in the Hispanic community.
