HOUSTON -- Police say they now know who stabbed a young mother dozens of times and left her to die in front of her two small children.

They've charged Elber Ruben Vazquez with the May 4th murder of Mireya Hernandez, 25.

The victim's sister found her body inside her home in the 6000 block of Bissonnet. Hernandez had been stabbed as many as 60 times.

Her two-year-old daughter was sitting on top of her mother and begging her to wake up. A 10-month-old daughter was nearby in her crib. Both children were unharmed but covered with their mother's blood.

Police believe Vazquez may have fled to Mexico, possibly to Ciudad Victoria to start a car business.

Police believe Vazquez fled to Mexico after the murder.
He is 5'6 inches tall, weighs 140 pounds and has a fleshy tumor growing from inside his left ear.

Investigators say Vazquez is a “coyote” who transports illegal immigrants into the U.S. for money. They say he was a friend of Mireya’s husband and would socially drink and do drugs with him. Although Vazquez was never introduced to Mireya, he had commented to his friend that he had a pretty wife. Sexual assault appeared to be the motive in the killing although the assault didn't occur.

At the crime scene, there had been a violent struggle since blood was found throughout the one bedroom apartment. Vazquez sustained a deep cut on one of his hands.

Mireya sold candy, sodas and soft drinks from her kitchen window. Cash and coins were in plain view when police arrived. There was no sign of forced entry.

Anyone with information on the suspect’s whereabouts is urged to contact the HPD Homicide Division at 713-308-3600 or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
