Immigration is a privilege

Immigration is a privilege

Jun. 11, 2004 12:00 AM

The Arizona Republic calls for "immigration reform." "The system is broken," it writes. What does this mean? Do we need more immigration? If businesses demand more of these workers, how come I see so many standing on corners and in our taxpayer-funded work center unable to find work?

Our capacity to rescue the people of Mexico is by no means unlimited. It is undeniable that large numbers of unskilled, uneducated immigrants are a massive burden on taxpayers who must pay for health care and schooling, etc. We cannot absorb so many so rapidly. I fear for the survival of our culture. There is no shame in being proud of, and defending, our great American culture.

Immigration is a privilege, not an entitlement. Those coming here now are getting the benefits of living here but are not showing respect for the process. The immigration reform we really need is to start enforcing our current laws. - Pete Wacker
