Groups to turn over signatures for immigration measure

Groups to turn over signatures for immigration measure

National groups which spent approximately $400,000 to help put an immigration initiative on Arizona's November ballot say they will turn over nearly 100,000 voter signatures to the formal campaign group.

The campaign group's leader has estimated its volunteers collected up to 30,000 signatures.

Together, those add up to just over the 122,000 signatures needed to qualify the measure for the ballot, and initiative organizers generally like to have a substantial cushion of additional signatures in case many are invalid.

The deadline to turn in signatures is July 1st.

The initiative is aimed at preventing illegal immigrants from receiving government services and it also would require proof of U.S. citizenship to register to vote.
