THE Immigration department yesterday said it was checking the visa status of a United States citizen who was in the country recruiting nurses.

Director of Immigration Joseph Browne said he had instructed his officials to look into the matter.

The man identified as Rocky Prasad was liaising with a local nurse, conducting interviews, at the Sunset Apartments.

Although he claimed to have obtained Government approval to recruit nurses, Health Minister Solomone Naivalu said he was not aware of any approval.

Mr Prasad only confirmed that he was in the country to recruit nurses but declined to give any further details.

Nurses have been warned to be wary of the man.

Mr Prasad promised to set up jobs in the US for the nurses for $4000.

The Ministry of Health, Fiji Nursing Association and the Labour ministry warned nurses to be careful of such deals.

Police said they did not have any information on a recruiting agent.

Nurses have left to work as care givers in the US for better pay.
